Black X-Wing Fleece Suit

Week two of Project Run and Play has begun! This week the challenge is to make an outfit that is inspired by cosplay, and I chose Star Wars. I was originally inspired by this awesome jacket Finn wears in the newest Star Wars movie, and I wanted to use the color scheme from the new black T-70 X-wing. My son is a big fan of whatever his daddy likes, so that means he is a big Star Wars fan. I also knew he would love a new mommy-made outfit, so I drew a rough sketch of the fleece shirt and fleece pants I wanted to make for him.

I found a well-fitting shirt of his, and used it as a pattern for the top. Since it is February already and spring will be arriving soon, I cut the fleece a little larger than his current shirt so he will be able to wear it next winter, too.

I cut two pieces, one for the front and one for the back.

The front needed a V-neck, so I cut it down into the right shape.

I added the orange part, and then drafted a pattern for the front pocket.

This little fella was so excited for his new outfit and he kept ripping it out of my hands as I was trying to piece it together. It took a lot of persuasion to get it back so I could finish it!

After cutting out the front pocket I sewed it on.

Then I sewed down the orange stripe on the back of the shirt.

I made a V-neck collar for the neckline and sewed it on.

For the sleeves I used a sweater in his size for the pattern.

I attached orange strips of fabric to each sleeve, then attached them to the shirt.

To make the fleece pants, I used a pair of his sweatpants as the pattern. I decided to make them differently than I had originally planned, and I like how it turned out. I think having the orange at both the top in the collar and the bottom of the pants helped to tie the entire outfit together.

He had fun holding the T-70 X-wing during our photo shoot, and he loves his new outfit!

The outfit is just a little big on him, but I have a feeling it will fit perfectly next fall when it gets cold again.

I really like the orange stripe I added to the back of the shirt. It adds color and makes it more interesting.

Thank you, black X-wing, for the inspiration.

Have you checked out the different designs from the Project Run and Play sew-along and the contestants? I am amazed at the creativity and beauty in everyone's creations! There is certainly a lot of talent in this week's challenge.

Thanks for stopping by!

  7. I'm always so intimidated by tracing a pattern off RTW clothing. Yours came out so nicely!

  9. This is great! I too am a big fan of Star Wars, fleece and all things orange. I like how you used the plane as your inspiration instead of a costume from the movie- that's a fun twist on the theme.
